Welcome to Flipflops & Tikibars

What is it about Florida ? Why is it my favorite place to relax and to have fun? Is it because of the weather? Yes! Is it because of the beautiful beaches? Yes! Is it because of the interesting places? Yes! Is it because of the hundreds good restaurants? Yes! Well, I can go on and on and on! But the main factor is that Florida has so much to offer. We saw it all! The last years Florida has become a very relaxing place to us.

Something about my favorite place in Florida...Key West

Ernest Hemingway, Harry Truman, and Jimmy Buffett have all been crazy about Key West. What is it about this place? For starters, the atmosphere. Wherever you walk in Key West, you'll discover unexpected beauty, individual detail, and friendly people. The pastel cottages; the waving palms; the long, sandy beaches; and the red, languid sunsets.

Remember that when clouds or a chill rain covers Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and South Beach, it is usually deliciously, even recklessly sunny in Key West!  Everytime I hear this song, I’ll think of key West. I just close my eyes, and I'm in Key West , with the perfect Margarita in my hand and singing..........

Take off your watch, put on you flipflops and come with me to paradise!
Let me tell you all about the places I've been in Florida!

KEY WEST 2008

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park
We’ve been so many times to key West and never went to Fort Zachary State Park. This year we visited this historic park. I don’t understand why we’ve never been here before. What a beautiful site. Especially if you like to photograph.

About the beach:
Our B&B innkeeper said this is the only beach she (and many locals) will swim in because it is bacteria free. It’s a great area, where the water is so blue. The beach is surrounded with Australian Pines, which I didn’t expected in the Florida Keys. There are shaded picnic areas, barbecue spots, restrooms, showers, chair and umbrella rentals. (chairs are $15 dollar each…not very cheap!) If you are hungry, go to the Cayo Hueso Café for food, snacks and refreshments.

Fort Zachary Beach:

Beaches of Key West
The beaches are not spectacular and Key West does not have a large number of beaches. They beaches are small and the island rumor tells us that the sand is brought in from the Bahamas, just pleasure of the visitors.

Are you ready for Key West??
Vakantie | Key West | 20 Maart 2008 | 17:06:54

When I show my photos of Key West to my friends and family, they always ask me were I took these pictures. When I tell them I took them in Key West they are really surprised. They like what they see. But what is not to like about Key West? The island is really beautiful. But that’s the easy part. Explaining the atmosphere of Key West is more difficult because this is something you can’t take pictures of. It’s something you have to experience yourself. I like the ‘laid back’ lifestyle, but I can also understand that not everybody likes Key West. Let me tell you about the way I see Key West; not to convince you, but just to give you a look at Key West.

The People of Key West

The people, who are born in Key West, call themselves "Conchs" (pronounced konk). The people in Key West were outraged at the fact that they where being treated like foreigners by the federal government and formed their own "nation," the Conch Republic. They have their own flag, passport, and they celebrate the Independence Day of the Conch republic every April. Not only "Conchs" are in love with the island. Key West is also very popular by artists, musicians, writers, and gay people. Someone told me that the Gay community makes up about 20% of the citizens of Key West. That’s why you’ll see so many rainbow flags in Key West. Some hotels even emphasize that they are gay friendly. For a Dutch girl like me this is very strange since in the Netherlands gays are excepted everywhere. Unfortunately in places in the United States of America it isn’t accepted, that’s the reason Key West is a (gay) paradise for them.

Key West has also attracted famous people over the years, for example Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, and Jimmy Buffett. Although some of them already past away or moved to another place, the stories, myths, and houses are still in Key West.

While walking through the streets of Key West you’ll see and probably meet many characteristic people, all with their unique story of how they end up in Key West. Take a few minutes to talk to them. They like that, and most of the time they make you laugh with their unique and original way of asking for money (Do you have a dollar for a beer? I will promise you not to spend it on food!)
Key West - People of Key West

The citizens of Key West are hard working people; they have to, because of the high costs and taxes. Unfortunately, the cost of living in Key West is the highest in the State. Because of this, many Conchs are leaving the Keys. I wonder how long it will take before all houses are turned in into hotels, B&B’s, and vacation homes. Where are all the people going to stay who are actually working in Key West?

The people of Key West are very friendly and helpful. They will do every that is possible to make you feel at home in their paradise!

The surroundings of the Island

Key West has palm-lined streets, beautiful mansions, gingerbread cottages, clear warm waters, colorful flowers, and chickens (!). Every mansion and cottage has its own unique story. Many guided (walking) tours offer you a peek in the life of the people who lived here. What I also like about this island is the flora. I always enjoy the lush tropical vegetation, the beautiful colors of the flowers, and the gardens. During our stay we saw, besides many cats, also a large number of chickens. Chickens and Key West; they belong together. A match made in paradise. Although it seems that there is going to be trouble in paradise since the city of Key West came up with their plan to get rid of all the chickens.
Beautiful Pink Flower Beautiful flowers

Clear blue waters

Ernest Hemingway fished in the waters of Key West, but I like to swim in it too. The warm climate of the water is perfect for swimming, scuba diving, and snorkeling. Don’t expect too much of the beaches. The beaches are small, the shore has coral shards (which are sharp), so watch out and wear shoes. Nevertheless, I always have a great time at Duval Beach. It’s just perfect; Palm trees, beach chairs, and a cabana boy (he brings you the good stuff like tasty cocktails). Once in a while, we go into the water just to cool off.

Packing list

For the ladies, leave the Manolo Blahniks at home. Take your flip-flops instead (or buy when you haven’t got any). For the men, bring those wallets with you, because we like the Margaritas!! In Key West it doesn’t matter how you look or what you are wearing, you’re accepted without a doubt. There is not really a dress code in Key West but if you want to dress up for dinner just iron your shirt and you’ll be okay! That’s how it goes in paradise. Always remember that it can be steamy hot and humid in Key West. Make sure you will drink enough water (or for some who start in the morning, an alcoholic drink), stay hydrated! And last but not least, don’t forget to bring (plenty) of sunscreen.

We didn’t need a watch during our stay. Don't worry, don't hurry, you are in Key West after all; It’s Island time and the bars are always open. Now that I think of it, although the bar has doors, I have never seen Sloppy Joes closed.

Overall

For me Key West is the perfect escape of the hassles of today’s world. I’ve heard many people talk about the "Key West Disease" and never leave. Oh my god, I’d think I have it too…

Restaurants in Key West

Blue Heaven

Blue Heaven is a wonderful restaurant and very ‘Key West’. Their very low-key atmosphere attracts many locals and tourists. It’s located in Bahama Village. The restaurant has a back yard with a outdoor bar. ou can sit dry under one of the old sails hanging between the trees. In the garden you will meet the chickens and roosters. They are walking around (for example) under your table and chasing at each other. So if you scared of chickens, this isn’t the place for you.

The entrance of Blue Heaven

Recommended by many locals we thought it was time to try lunch at the Blue Heaven. Tables were filled (60 %) with locals and tourists. We got a table in the middle of the back yard. Normally I don’t prefer a table in the middle, but this one was fine. The waiter was very friendly and explained the specialty of the day to us. We decided to try something of the regular menu. I had Jamaican Jerk Chicken Sandwich, which are strips of boneless breast tenderized in a 12-herb marinade, served on a bakery fresh bun with lettuce and tomato. It was very good.

As dessert we tried their very special and homemade Key Lime Pie. It was the best we ever had. Sure there are many restaurants with a good piece of Key Lime Pie, but never as good as the Blue Heaven. I can’t explain the taste in words, the only thing I can say: Don’t leave the island, before trying their Key Lime Pie!

Chickens walking around at Blue Heaven

The prices are reasonable. We’ve never tried breakfast or diner. That is something we are going to do next time. The staff was very friendly and checked on us at just the right amount. They even filled my empty bottle of water (just before we left), which I bought somewhere else. They let you sit as long as you want, even if you’re finished lunch. It was very nice to relax some more, before exploring the streets of Key West. The only thing I missed at Blue Heaven was some live music. Maybe they only have live music in the weekends, but I’m not sure. The atmosphere makes the whole experience!

Grand Cafe Key West

Right on Duval street is a restaurant called Grand cafe. This is a great restaurant. The food is good. A very friendly staff. You can sit inside or outside. Defenitly a restaurant that you have to try.

Year after year we’re going to the Grand for dinner or lunch. The food is really good, the wine is delicious, and the desserts… well, you have to try it yourself. The (international) staff are always very friendly and polite. The ambience hasn't changed over the years, and that’s good. We like it as it is.

Grand cafe Key West

There is something else that didn’t change; the discount coupons. You’ll find the coupons at some B&B’s and at the visitor center. When you have a entrée during dinner, you’ll get a free bottle of wine. They offer three wines you can choose from. If you want to have a wine off of the wine list, you’ll get a 50% discount. If you have lunch at The Grand you’ll get a free glass of wine.

Everytime we were greeted quickly by a friendly hostess and shown to a table. We prefer a table on the large front deck looking out on to Duval St. For me the perfect spot at The Grand. Enjoying the food, the atmosphere and watch the people pass by.

We had lunch and several dinners at The Grand. What did we eat?

Dinner: As an appetizer I had the Carpaccio of beef tenderloin with shaved parmigiano and white truffle. It was delicious! Really, this one you have to try!

Entrée: Sautéed snapper with lemon brown butter and seasonal vegetable and creamed potatoes. In one word: fantastic!

One evening we were very late, so we weren’t very hungry. We decided to have some appetizers. This is what we had:

I had the Smoked Norwegian Salmon with capers, red union, sour cream and toast points. I enjoyed this so much. Good food and wine. What more do you need?

My spouse had the Jumbo lumb crab cakes with Key lime mustard. It’s getting boring, but this was also very good!

At another evening we had for dinner:

Caprese Salad with buffalo mozzarella, roma tomato, basil, and balsamico. Just delicious!

I had again the Carpaccio (I just love it) and the Wild Mushroom Fettuccini tossed with spinach, garlic and roma tomato white wine sauce.

Everything was presented well and tasted great. My mouth waters just thinking about the tasteful food. I immediately get hungry…

Now you’re wonder if I haven’t any negative points about the Grand! Well, I just can’t find anything what was bothering me. I can highly recommend The Grand. They have a tasty menu, feeling for good ingredients, great ambience, and a friendly staff. You won't be disappointed!

Southernmost Beach Club (also known as Duval Beach Club)

Duval Beach Club changed their name in The Southernmost Café. Everything in that area has ‘Southernmost’ in their name, so it was a matter of time for Duval Beach Club changing it too. The Southernmost Beach café is an open air restaurant. The view is magnificent, because the restaurant is literally right on the beach. It’s great to have a sandy beach in the foreground. We noticed that they renovated the restaurant. A new color of paint does miracles. It looks fresh and inviting. The tables, chairs and staff are still the same.

The food is nothing fancy, but what do you expect from a bistro on the beach? Sandwiches, burgers, salads is what they offer for lunch. I think it’s a very good spot for breakfast and lunch. The staff is friendly and give you enough refills. One time I got a refill in an plastic cup, for me taking it to the beach! That was very thoughtful.

The combination of the beach and the Southernmost beach Café works fine. In the morning some sunbathing, lunch at Southernmost Beach Club, relaxing under a palm tree and in the afternoon a nice refreshing cocktail from again the Southernmost Beach Club. What a day!!

El Siboney

I did some homework before we left to Key West. We decided, after reading many positive reviews on the Internet, to have a late lunch at El Siboney, a Cuban restaurant. It was raining a whole day, so it was a perfect moment to sit inside. Normally I prefer to sit outside when dining, especially in the Keys.

After we ordered, we did get a basket of delicious warm Cuban bread.

We had Ropa Viejo with yellow or white rice (you can choose) and black beans in a separate bowl. The meal we had was good, but not very special in my opinion. I think we were expecting too much after reading the very positive reviews on the Internet. Maybe we had to order something else. We didn’t want to wait for an hour to have there famous Paella. (Takes about an hour to prepare it.)

Their specialty is homemade Sangria, which was very tasty. The ambiance isn't the most attractive, it’s the food why people are coming back! It’s a good place to have a great inexpensive meal.

Parking:
Street parking or get lucky and park your car at the small parking lot in front of the restaurant.

Location:
It’s in a residential neighborhood. If you want directions you can ask the concierge of your hotel or any local. Everybody seems to know about El Siboney It’s a local favorite!

Monday-Saturday 11:00am to 9:30pm

Cash only!

Hard Rock Cafe

Almost every popular city has a Hard Rock Café. Key West is a popular city so a Hard Rock Café is no exception in this tropical town. The Hard Rock Café is housed in a restored two-story Victorian house on Duval Street. The story about this house goes that this Victorian house is haunted. I don’t know if this is true; the Hard Rock employees reported many stories and evidence in the past of this haunted house. The Hard Rock Café is one of the places the Haunted Ghost tour visits every night.

Don’t be scary, they don’t bite… You can still eat here. We did and I didn’t notice any ghosts…

The formula of the Hard Rock Café is the same everywhere. The restaurant is filled with rock 'n roll memorabilia. I, personally, don’t pay much attention to the stuff on the walls. There are people who come to this place, just for the memorabilia of Madonna, George Michael, and the Rolling Stones. I’m not one of them. The atmosphere is better in Key West then other Hard Rock Café’s I’ve once visit. The beautiful patio overlooking Duval Street is the perfect place to have diner and to enjoy the people who walk by.

Let’s talk about the food. I like what they offer. The menu has a lot to choose from. You can keep it simple by ordering a burger or sandwich. But you can also order pasta, salmon steaks, and other barbecue meals.

My spouse’s favorite is the Pulled-Pork Sandwich. First it is hickory smoked then hand-pulled. He said it was very tender and the barbecue sauce did make it perfect. It comes with fries, ranch beans, and coleslaw.

I like the Ahi Tuna Steak Sandwich. It’s basted in a teriyaki sauce and then grilled. Topped with a pineapple and served on a dusted dun. It comes with fresh lemon mayo which is delicious and fries.

The people who work at the Hard Rock Café in Key West are very polite and friendly. We didn’t have to ask for refills. Sometimes it can be busy, so busy that you’ll have to wait to get a table. The music can be loud, but that’s the Hard Rock Café. If you don’t like that, go somewhere else for diner.

Sunset Pier at the Ocean Key Resort
Key West is renowned for its sunset celebrations. Mallory Square is the place to be before and during the sunset, but let's not forget the other nice places. Sunset Pier is one of these other places.Located on the right hand side of Mallory Square facing the ocean and attached to the Ocean Key Resort and Spa.
The bar is very colorful. Sunset Pier gives you front row seats that overlook the ocean. It's a perfect place to enjoy exotic drinks and eat some tasty food, all while watching the spectacular sunset. Sunset Pier also offers nightly music and dancing, with entertainers from the islands and beyond. I love this place. It’s a cool place to hang for the sunset.

Margaritaville

It's one of those places you've got to go if you're a parrot head. And if you aren’t, than it’s still a place you’ve got to go. Walking in you notice all the Key West and Jimmy Buffett memorabilia, street signs, and all the bright, loud colors covering the walls.

I ordered the "Cheeseburger in Paradise" which came with fries. It was made just like the song says; "Medium rare with mustard... onion slice... lettuce and tomato... Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes...” It was good and tasty.

There is also live entertainment at night and in the weekends. They say Jimmy does stop by and play when he is visiting, well not when we were around. Maybe next time…..who knows??

Next door is the gift shop if you need to say, 'Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt.' You’ll find all sorts of Jimmy Buffett merchandise, like t-shirts, various choice of music, and a whole lot more.

Favorite Dish:
Cheeseburger in Paradise of course!

Restaurants in Islamorada

Morada Bay Café

I never heard of Morada Beach café until this year. I searching the internet when I saw a photo of Morada Beach café. I knew I had to go there one day and so it was in October when we visited this place. I know for sure; I never passing through Islamorada anymore without stopping here. Really, this place is a gem!

Hidden gem: Morada Bay Café

The location is just fantastic, its right on the beach!! View of the bay, sand palm trees, great furniture; all those ingredients make this place special. You can sit inside, outside on the porch, with your bear feet in the sand. When standing on the beach you’ll notice a second restaurant, Pierre’s Restaurant. We didn't try Pierre's, because we were there only for lunch and I definitely wanted to try Morada Bay Café.

We had a nice meal at Morada Bay. Before our meal was served they offered us tortilla chips. After lunch I had a Cosmopolitan, which was good, but not the best I ever had. In my opinion Morada Bay café is nicer than Lor-e-lei. A better ambiance with a great location!

The time we were there is was quiet. Maybe because we were early. I think that the evenings are busier. In the evening there is live music and a beautiful sunset. With a drink in your hand and your love one sitting next to you…I can’t imagine a better romantic place than Morada Bay! I hope to come back in the future to have a great evening at Morada Bay Cafe.

Lorelei Cabana Bar

We always make a stop at the Holiday Isles in Islamorada. The place is sold and they will close all the bars when it become condos. So we decided to try a different restaurant. I saw some pictures on the Internet of the Lorelei and it looked very nice.

The Lorelei

When we arrived for lunch at the Lorelei it looked all so new. Later I was found out that the Lorelei was destroyed with Hurricane Wilma. They rebuilt the whole place. They are also planning to build condos, which is a good plan, knowing that the bars at Holiday Isles going to be closed in the future. You have a great view over the bay.

This is what we ordered:

Mozzarella Sticks with a marinara sauce for $7

Steve’s Famous Conch Fritters served with lemon and conch sauce for $7

Steve’s Famous Fish Sandwich. I had the fried grouper and John had the blackened mahi mahi, both served on fresh ciabatta bread. On the side: billfish sauce, fresh dill, lettuce and tomato for $9.

The food was simple but good. I think the location does it all!

Restaurant in Bradenton Beach

The Beach House

Several years ago, we had dinner in a restaurant on the beach with a great ambiance. We did not remember which restaurant it was—until last year. We drove around after our stay in Sarasota. We were hungry and looking for a nice restaurant to have lunch. While driving along the beach we saw a restaurant called the Beach House. The front of the restaurant was not that spectacular, but anyway we parked our car and decided to take a look. Behind the restaurant is a big terrace with a lot of tables and chairs, all with a view on the beach. This was not that bad after all. In fact, it looked familiar to us. We realized this was the restaurant that we visited a few years ago.

The Beach House

With the palm trees, the view of the beach and the beautiful sunsets makes this place a very nice spot to spend some time. There’s live music played by local musicians on the weekends and in the season during the week.

Just like last year, we had lunch. There is a lot of seafood on the menu, which all looks delicious it is hard to choose from. It all looks so good.

This is what we ordered:

Black Jack Mahi Sandwich ($11.65)
Fresh mahi, blackened and topped with Pepper Jack cheese.

Gulf Coast Crab Cake ($9.55)
A Delicious Combination of Lump and Claw Meat, blended with breadcrumbs and seasonings. They called it an Island Delicacy!

The Mahi was very fresh and the Crab Cakes tasted good. We enjoyed it very much!

The Beach House

We didn’t have lunch in other nearby restaurants, so I can’t compare it with the others. My experience about The Beach House is very positive. The Beach House offers you a good atmosphere, location, and tasty food. What more do you want?

Cha Cha Coconuts

Cha Cha Coconuts is a Carribean style restaurant in the heart of St. Armands Circle. It’s a perfect spot for a simple meal which are all reasonably-priced. Cha Cha Coconuts is a great place to listen to live music and a great place to watch the shoppers and tourists. A sidewalk splits their terrace. We ate at Cha Cha Coconuts two time that week. Both times was a great experience. Live music was offered the second time and the musician played many Jimmy Buffett songs.

Restaurants in Naples

Tommy Bahamas Tropical cafe
This restaurant looks very tropical. It is located between the two retail stores. On one side is the men's store, on the other side the women's store. You can buy clothes as well as other items and decorations in Tropical Style, signature by Tommy Bahamas. You can sit inside and outside. We prefer to sit outside on the patio. The large tree gives the people some shadow. There are also standing umbrellas on the patio.

Tommy Bahama's Tropical Cafe

We visited Tommy Bahamas for dinner. It’s a very popular place to eat, keep in mind that you have to wait. We had to wait 40 minutes. There were people that had to wait for over an hour. There was live music the two times we’ve been there. The music had a typical Island sound (Jimmy Buffet and more). It had a great ambiance. Tommy Bahamas has an open kitchen. There is a variety of several wines and cocktails.

We’ve been there twice, one time for dinner and the next day for lunch. Dinner was definitely better than lunch. Maybe I had to order something else for lunch, because I had the fried grouper sandwich. It was good but nothing special.

Overall it’s in my opinion expensive for what you're getting; the ambiance is what’s making me coming back.

Restaurants in Miami

Cafe Milano

After spending our day at the beach at the Sonesta Key Biscayne Resort, we decided to go to Miami Beach for dinner. Ocean Drive offers a wide variety of sidewalk café’s. They all have the food on a display, so it isn’t that difficult to choose from. After walking up and down Ocean Drive searching for a nice restaurant, we ended up at Caffe Milano.

In order to attract as many people as possible to fill their terrace, many restaurants offer everything on the menu for half price. As soon as there is enough people on the terrace they take away the 50% discount sign. A full restaurant attracts more people because they believe it is a hot spot or just a good place to eat.

It’s great to dine outside by candlelight with a little breeze from the ocean. During the day you can sit under the over-sized umbrellas that protect you from the sun. The interior looks great. Very much ‘design’ (or look like design).

The food is very tasteful. I had the Lasagna alla Bolognese. (Fresh homemade pasta with their homemade meat sauce, Bechamel, Mozzarella, and Parmigiano. It was simple but delicious!

John had the Risotto de la Mar. The seafood filling could have been a little more generous, but overall it was very good.

We didn’t know what to aspect, because this restaurant was all new to us, but we have no regrets. We had a great dinner and a wonderful time.

News Cafe

"Here in Miami, I've finally found what I was looking for: the center of my circle. I want to stay here and live out my time... forever." - Gianni Versace

Conveniently located in the heart of the Miami Beach on Ocean Drive, News Cafe is popular with tourists from all over world. This café/newsstand/bookstore was also a favourite of Gianni Versace. The News Cafe was the last place Versace went before he was murdered on July 15, 1997. I have no idea how popular the café was before the death of Versace, but I think the News Café is now famous for being the place where Gianni Versace had his last breakfast.

The way the News Cafe is set up, you can sit back and relax, feel the ocean breeze, watch the locals and tourists walk by, or simply enjoy the shining sun. You can also watch the Miami low-riders thump out deep bass rhythms as they cruise by. Open 24 hours a day, News Cafe offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and after-hours meals. The News Cafe Store offers a wide variety of local, national, and international newspapers and magazines, a selection of books, CD's, tobacco products, and other sundry.

It’s a nice place to see and be seen. It’s too bad it’s always crowded, but besides that, I can imagine why Gianni Versace used to hang out here all the time.

Fox Cafe

Monday morning, our last day in Miami. Normally we have breakfast in our hotel, but since this was our last day in Miami we decided to go to Miami Beach to have breakfast. We didn’t know what and where we wanted to eat. We walked along the restaurants to see what they had to offer. We ended up at a restaurant called Fox Café.

The restaurant offers breakfast for only $4.95, a fixed price for all items on the menu, although drinks are excluded. We thought for that price the choice would be limited, but we were wrong. The menu offers a large array of choices. It didn’t take too long to make a decision. I ordered the salmon and some fresh squeezed orange juice and John ordered scrambled eggs with bacon, toast, and also fresh squeezed orange juice. After that, we ordered an espresso, which was very tasty, like it should be. I wouldn’t expect anything less of an Italian restaurant. It’s a great place for people watching. Some people walked by two or three times, just to be seeing.
The interior is beautifully decorated with some design elements. The restaurant offers inside and outside dining. Since most of the days in The Netherlands are too cold, rainy, or windy to eat outside, we take every opportunity to eat outside.

It is a great way to start your day. Ocean Drive has many good restaurants. I don’t know if there are better restaurants for breakfast, but I was satisfied with Fox Café.

The Magic Kingdom, Orlando
Vakantie | Florida | 14 Maart 2008 | 13:29:09

We had one last day in Orlando and we were discussing what to do. We did a lot of shopping during our vacation and we didn’t want to go to another shopping mall. We decided to go to an amusement park, but which one? We had been coming to Florida since 1993 and we had visited all the parks in Orlando. After some thinking, we had two options left; Seaworld and the Magic Kingdom. I don’t know why, but the Magic Kingdom was the park we had chosen.

After paying the parking fee, we were driving to the parking lot. The parking staff helped everybody to their spot. From here, a tram takes you to the monorail or the ferry. They both take you to the entrance of the Magic Kingdom. We prefer the monorail because it had no waiting line and is faster (I think).

Because we saw it all during the years, we had no rush. In fact, it was very relaxing. At some point too relaxing, almost boring. We decided to have lunch. We had lunch in Cosmic Ray's Starlight Café in Tomorrow Land. Don’t expect too much of it. The choice is limited and mass-produced. We always have lunch here, because there is always a spare seat even at busy times. We both had a burger with fries and a Diet Coke. There is a kind of salad bar, where you can put some extras to your burger. (like unions, mushrooms, tomato, and much more)

After lunch it became more fun, we did see a show in front of the castle and did some of our favorite attractions.

Big Thunder Mountain:

I have always enjoyed Big Thunder Mountain. The scenery is a gold mine in the old west. It’s a roller coaster, but a mild one.

Haunted mansion:

This ride is a Disney classic and a must do! Not for us, but for young children it might be really scary. I think the holograms are great; especially with the ghost in the car at the end of the ride. That was funny.
Stitch's Great Escape:

The Alien Encounter did receive a fair number of complaints for its scare factor, so they changed it into Stitch's Great Escape. We’ve been in both attractions and Stitch's Great Escape is much less terrifying that Alien Encounter, but it has still nice special effects. For example; Stitch is "jumping" on your shoulders and burping on you (wow, that smell….).

Country Bears Jamboree:

The singing bears. The first time we saw it was better than this time. It’s old and needs a rehab. The audio system should be replaced. The quality is very bad. Children won’t probably notice this, but as an adult, you’ll hear the noise of the mechanism.

It’s a small world:

This is a ride for little kids with a song that goes on and on and on. You will have the song stuck in your head. Therefore, if you don’t want to have that, I advise you to go later in the afternoon/evening. It's a slow boat ride that can fit many people. I found this ride good for relaxing from heat.

Pirates of the Caribbean:

It was closed for maintenance! Too bad, because I like The Pirates of the Caribbean
Main Street, Magic Kingdom Magic Kingdom, Orlando

Mickey's PhilharMagic:

This was definitely my favorite of the day! Maybe because this was all new to us, but this show is so much fun. We liked it so much we visited the show twice that day. Mickey's PhilharMagic is a 3-D musical film with special in-theater effects. The theatre has the largest seamless projection screen in the world! I thoughts this was fantastic. There are a couple extra effects that you'll have to experience. (I liked the pie smell) The star in this story is Donald Duck, but you’ll also see other Disney characters like Aladin as well as Ariel, Peter Pan and Simba. The best place to sit and view the show is in the middle of the theatre. We wait until many people already gone in. This way you’ll have the best change to sit in the middle, because the people who go first have to move on to the end of the row. (they always yell “All the way down..”) One last thing; Look behind you at the end of the show to see Donald…well that you have to see it yourself.

SpectroMagic:

This is definitely a must see! To find a good viewing spot for the parade you have to sit down at least 2 hours before it start. When it finally begins, you will agree with me, that it’s worth the waiting. This time we didn’t wait for 2 hours, we did it in the past, but not any more. We prefer a half an hour to stand somewhere. We don’t care where that spot will be, as long as we see a little bit of the parade, it is fine by us.
Magic Kingdom Main Street Magic Kingdom, Orlando

Wishes:

A “story in the sky"; and that it is! It’s all about making a wish come true. Wishes is a firework spectacle; something you have to see with your own eyes. You must be there to understand the beauty of Wishes. This firework goes on and on and on. The combination of music and fireworks is spectacular. It is a 12-minute spectacle, but it feels a lot longer. You forget everything else while watching the fireworks. It moved me in a very special way. This show is worth the admission fee alone. If you want to feel the ultimate Disney experience, wait till the end of the day and you won’t be sorry. At the end of the day we were headed to our hotel with a very magical memory; a memory to treasure!

Overall, we had a great time in the Magic Kingdom. The park is starting to show signs of age. If noticed that they are working on that issue, because of the maintenance of several attractions. We don't have kids so I suppose my experience was a bit different from others with children. I’ll think next time we go to Seaworld.

Animals, Nature & Parks in Florida
Natuur | Florida | 06 Maart 2008 | 17:04:52

Florida Keys Wild Bird Center

I always wanted to go to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center. The people who work at the Bird Center are all volunteers. They help birds who are victims of fishing or road accidents. The most famous residents are the Pelicans. Of course you’ll find other birds like hawks, spoonbills, pelicans, herons, pigeons and many others. There's no admission fee, but they appreciate a donation ($5 donation per car).

There is a wooden walkway from the entrance of the center to the Florida Bay. Wherever you look, you see birds; along the boardwalk and up in the trees. I can spend hours here! For those who want to learn more about birds, this is the place!!

Try to be there around 3:30pm, because at this time it’s ‘Pelican Feeding Time’. I can tell you; I’ve never saw so many Pelicans in one time. The Pelican is my favorite bird and it was like a dream come true. Hundreds of them come to the Florida Bay where the volunteers are waiting to feed them. I enjoyed every minute of this daily event. Sit on a bench and watch the volunteers feed the hundreds of hungry birds (which are not so sick, I guess). When you’re stand up watch out for the pelicans, because they are walking behind, next and in front of you!

The only thing you have to get over is the smell. Wow, it’s unbelievable. Because it’s in the mangrove, I had many bug biting me on my legs. But at the end, with this experience in your pocket, you forget the smell and bites very quickly!

The Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center was located first in Islamorada (since 1984) and moved when they needed more space to Tavernier. Take the U.S. 1to Key West and stop at Mile Marker 93.6 (bayside).

Bahia Honda State Park

If you like beautiful beaches, and I mean white sand and blue water, you have to go to this place. It's a 45-minute drive from Key West. Swim, dive, walk, stay the night at the campground (with an ocean view!!)… everything is possible!

CAMPING:
The park has three camping areas providing a total of 80 campsites. We've never stayed on one of the camping sites, but we did see it when we were driving by in our car. It looks nice and has an amazing view. Restrooms and hot showers are easily accessible.

FISHING:
Tarpon fishing in the area rates among the best in the state. Charter boats and guides are generally available for hire during tarpon season. It can be quite expensive.

SWIMMING:
Bahia Honda has some of the best beaches in the Florida Keys. The water and beach is amazing. Look at my pictures and you’ll know what I mean!

Key West; Bahia Honda State Park Bahia Honda State Park

SNACK BAR:
There is also a snack bar located in the main building where you can order from different menus, including ones with pizza, deli sandwiches, salads, ice cream, and more.

OPENING HOURS:
The park is open daily from 8am until sunset. All park buildings, including the Concession Building, are open 8am to 5pm.

It has plenty of places to get away from other people. If you like blue water and white sand (and, not to forget, great views), make Bahia Honda your next stop on the journey to Key West.

Respect Nature; Especially the Animal's Habitat!

Beach for us means sand, sea, sunshine, and relaxing. The beach is also a habitat for many animals; we must respect the beach and protect the animals. We saw this Yellow Crab at the beach of the Helmsley Sandcastle in Sarasota (Lido Beach). During the day, when the sun is too hot, a crab hides itself in the sand or shadow. If a crab is in the sun too long he won’t survive and die. When you see a crab or other animal; don’t touch it and leave the crab alone!

Sarasota yellow crab

We must keep the beach clean. So many people enjoy a day at the beach. At the end of the day, they leave their trash behind. Is it too much to ask to clean up? It’s a shame to see all the trash, like plastic cups, newspapers, food, on the beach. The animals didn’t ask for it. They do nothing wrong to us, so why should we do it to them and mess up there environment.

Not only birds and crabs are frequent visitors of the beach; turtles use Lido beach (and other areas) as a nesting habitat. Sea turtles come to the shoreline, make a nest and lay their eggs. After two months (this is the time the eggs incubate,) the newborn turtle wants to go to the waters. They wait instinctively when the sand is cooled off before leaving the nest. That’s why the sea turtles scramble to the water at night. Only a few will survive this journey. Luckily, there are many volunteers to help this process a little bit to give all the baby turtle a change.
The Helmsley Sandcastle in Sarasota has yellow-orange light at the main building that faces the beach. This is just for the sea turtles. If the lights are too strong, they won’t leave the nest. With the special lights, they will try to make their way to the water. A Sea Turtle nesting area is marked. It is illegal to disturb the nests! It’s important to respect the beautiful flora and fauna that Florida has to offer.

For the sea turtles, sometimes a helping hand from a human is making a difference! For the best interest of the animals; do something if you see that they need some help, otherwise leave the animals alone!

Beautiful Flowers

Florida has a unique flora and fauna. Take for example this flower, the Strelitzia. Also known as the Bird of Paradise. With their variety of brilliant colors and sculptural forms, Strelizias are very popular. The Strelitzia is well suited to growing conditions in southern Florida and can be very impressive in the right location. The Strelitzia is also popular in the cut flower trade because they last for weeks as a cut flower.

Hotel & B&B in Florida
Vakantie | Hotels/B&B's | 29 Februari 2008 | 14:35:58

The Paradise Inn, Key West (B&B)

This is not the first time I write about the Paradise Inn. Because it's our
favorite B&B in Key West . We never book in front, unless you get a great
deal. The best time to go to Key West (without a reservation) is on Sunday.
You can drive easily to Key West ; the road isn’t that crowdie like on a
Friday or Saturday. It’s also the best time to get a room in one of the popular
B&B’s that Key West has to offer. The weekends are most of the time fully
booked.

We had a room for 5 nights in The Paradise Inn. Again it was our favorite
room, number 105. This room has a porch with a table and chairs. It’s
close to the pool. When you’re sitting at your porch, you can see the pool.
We noticed there were some trees missing in the garden. This is the result
of the hurricane last year. The building itself didn’t get any damage. Still
there are enough trees in the garden, so it all looks beautiful. The breakfast
didn’t change. They still have the very tasty pastries from Croissants the
France . The service is time after time good. It didn’t change through the
years we’ve been in The Paradise Inn. It’s always difficult to recommend a
B&B on your own experience, but with this little paradise I can ensure
you will have a great time!

This B&B has a friendly and very helpful staff, a good breakfast, and always
enough food for everybody. You can park your car on the property for free,
behind a fence, which you can open by a remote control. You get the
remote control with the keys of your room. The location is perfect, close to

Duval Street , but when you’re sitting in the garden it’s very quiet.
I can highly recommend The Paradise Inn. They have proved to us that
through the years they have the same service and atmosphere to offer.

La Mer and Dewey House, Key West (B&B)

This perfect B&B is at the end of Duval Street and the only B&B right
on the beach. The rooms are very nice and clean, with a beautiful
bathroom. Every day there was a fresh flower in the room. The staff is
great and friendly. Breakfast, which is included, is served every morning
with lots of different kinds of croissants and other pastries, fresh fruit
and fresh juices. he breakfast is the best we ever had in a B&B. There is
a high tea in the afternoon, all sort of snacks, fruits, drinks and lots more.
Every room has a porch or patio with some chairs. If you like a
bed-and-breakfast with good service and friendly people, this is the place
for you!

When we got home, we received a postcard from the staff of La Mer just
thanking us for staying there during our holiday! Now that’s service!! It's
expensive, but everything is worth it. If you looking for something special,
good service, a friendly staff and a B&B that is right at the beach, than this
is the place for you!

The Blue Parrot Inn, Key West (B&B)

The Parrot was originally built in 1884. It has been renovated a couple of times.
We visited The Blue Parrot in May 2003 and a few years later for the second time.
The Blue Parrot Inn has nine units. It's a very quiet, relaxed, and friendly house.
The location couldn't be better, just 2 blocks off Duval. You wouldn't even guess
that Duval Street is just a few blocks away. Our room was named the Tropical.
The room was comfortable. In the morning you'll have complimentary breakfast.
The breakfast around (served around the pool) was limited in choice but good.

Helmsley Sandcastle, Sarasota (Hotel)

Sarasota is one of my favourite spots. Not too many people--that's how I
love to spend time on the beach! Lido Beach is south of Longboat Key,
past St. Armand’s Circle. The perfect place for me is the Helmsley
Sandcastle. We've stayed at the Sandcastle for the last 10 years, and it's
always a nice place. It is an older hotel, but it's kept nicely. The location is
excellent, right on the beach.

Sarasota Helmsley Sandcastle Sarasota Florida Sunset Sarasota, Florida

We had a Gulf-view room, definitely the best at the hotel and worth the
extra money. Waking up and hearing the sea, which is very relaxing, and
stepping onto your balcony and looking out to sea was superb! Those
rooms also have a refrigerator and lots of space, and they all are Gulf-front
rooms. One time, we had the suite with the Jacuzzi and steam cabin, and
that was great. This room has a view over the pool and the beach.
Helmsel Sanscaste in Sarasota Helmsley Sandcastle in Sarasota

The beach is also great! The water is a beautiful emerald-green. The water
on the Gulf coast is generally warmer and much calmer than the east coast.
If you are early in the mornings, you can find some beautiful shells--there
are so many on the beach. Every day, you’ll see sandpipers and pelicans
fishing. A must in the evening is to grab a deck chair and witness the
sunset. There are plenty of restaurants and shopping boutiques within
walking and boating distance.

I recommend this area of Florida to anyone looking for a beautiful and
quiet place to vacation.

Courtyard by Marriott Lake Buena Vista in The Marriott Village
Orlando (Hotel)
We’ve spend 3 nights at the Courtyard by Marriott; 1 night at the beginning
of our holiday in Orlando and 2 nights at the end of our holiday. We had a
late flight from New York to Orlando; it was 11:00pm before we got to the
hotel. We didn’t have to search for a hotel, because we did book the
 Courtyard at home.

Exterior Courtyard Orlando Outdoor Pool
Queen/Queen Guest Room (Photos website Marriott)

I didn’t expect much of the hotel, but if I look back I must say we were
pleasantly surprised. The hotel is located at the Marriott Village at
Vineland Avenue that houses two other hotels, which are The Fairfield Inn
and Springhill Suites. This hotel is close to all major attractions, especially
Magic Kingdown. (1 mile) There are plenty of restaurants and outlet malls
nearby.

The rooms are well decorated, though I did like the second room at the end
of our holiday more than the first room. It was more spacious. The beds are
very comfortable. The hotel has a pool, which looks very nice and there is an
indoor pool with two hot tubs.

If you don’t want to drive, the hotel offers a free bus to the parks. You can
leave your car at the parking lot next to the hotel. There is plenty of space for
everyone. We never had breakfast in the hotel, so I cannot give you an update
about that.

I would definitely go back to the Courtyard. With the Courtyard by Marriott, we’ve
found a good alternative for the Holiday Inn Nikki Bird. Nikki Bird is sold and no
longer a Holiday Inn. It’s also for extended stay, which is too long for us. We only
spend 1 or 2 nights in Orlando.

Sonesta Resort Key Biscayne (Hotel)

This was our third visit to the Sonesta Resort in Key Biscayne. We had a nicely renovated, very comfortable, and clean room. Each guest room offers an ocean or island/bay view and has a private balcony. It’s too bad that the bathroom isn’t renovated, but I have to say that the bathroom is clean and very large.
Sonesta Key Biscayne Sonesta Beach, Miami Key Biscayne

THE POOL AREA:
The Sonesta has an outdoor, heated Olympic-style pool. Two whirlpools overlooking the beach are located on the pool deck. Towels are provided by the resort.

THE BEACH:
This resort has a great, quiet, beautiful, and clean beach with palm trees and hammocks. It is like a Chickee village on the beach. There is a nice restaurant called the Snackerie where you can order hamburgers; hot dogs; fish; and an array of salads, snacks, and ice creams. You can eat your meal under a thatched-roof hut. That's how we like it.

Beach of Key Biscayne Soneste Beach Resort, Florida Key Biscayne

THE BAR:
For a nice drink, you can spend some time at the Sea Grape Bar, situated right on the beach. The Sea Grape also offers light fare, refreshing beverages, and live music on the beach on Saturdays.

There is also a bar by the pool called Seabreeze Bar. The bartenders make perfect tropical coolers or your favorite cocktail.

TIP:
If you want to go to the beach/pool, then you can take the elevator to the second floor so you don’t have to go through the lobby in your bathing attire feeling a bit underdressed.

THE RESTAURANTS:
The Sonesta has three restaurants inside. The Purple Dolphin offers Florida seafood. You can sit indoor or outdoors with a fantastic view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean .
Visit the Jasmine Cafe for a quick snack or full meal. In the morning, they have an array of tropical fruits and juices and freshly baked croissants. For lunch and dinner, you can order pizza or sandwiches. Two Dragons has Chinese and Mandarin cuisine, along with delicious Thai specialties. They have also a sushi bar.
Key Biscayne - This is me, ready for a snack!

When you have had enough of the beach, you can shop in one of the resort shops. There is Oasis, one of the best hotel boutiques in Miami , or go to Essentials.

This resort has a spa and salon where you can get European treatments for the face and body. I didn’t do this during my stay, so I can't say if it was good.

Don't visit this resort if you're looking for a place to party. If you like luxury, service, great location, and all the amenities of a resort hotel, this is the place for you.

!! UPDATE !!

This hotel is becoming a condo hotel and is closed for renovation! Too bad, because it was a wonderful place to stay!!

Cheeca Lodge Resort & Spa in Islamorada (Hotel)

We stayed in Cheeca Lodge Resort & Spa a few years ago. I heard it’s been renovated. Back then, I was very surprised. What a beautiful hotel with a high standard service. Many pathways were lined with palm trees and flowers and lit by torches at night. The setting is beautiful, right on the beach (ocean side).

This resort has two pools and a lagoon, and hammocks are everywhere. There are a lot of amenities. You can golf, fish, and much more. There are many spa facilities you can choose from.

(photos website Cheeca Lodge)

There are a lot of famous people that visit the resort, and I can imagine why. I would recommend this to anyone who loves spa treatments, golf, and luxury.

Hotels with a short description:

Beach Plaza South Beach in Miami (Hotel)

A few years ago we’ve stayed in the Beach Plaza . The rooms
were not renovated at that time. The website of Beach Plaza
says that the hotel is renovated. Maybe it’s better now. I prefer
other hotels now, but then we were on a budget so we didn’t
care how the room was. It is in the heart of South Beach . The
hotels has is no pool, but hey, you are a block from the beach
and all that South Beach has to offer! Who needs a pool?

You can walk easily to Washington Avenue , Lincoln Road and
Ocean Drive. This hotel has a good location, but not much else
going for it. If you are on a budget than this is perfect for you,
otherwise don’t stay here.

Dezerland Hotel in Miami (Hotel)

It’s been a while when we’ve visited the Dezerland Hotel.
I can’t remember much of it, so I don’t now if that is a good
sign or not. Anyway, it’s renovated, re-designed and upgraded
not so long ago and the hotel has now a spa facility. The hotel is
located one mile south of Bal Harbour . If you like to step back
into the rock 'n' roll era and enjoy the 1950s and 1960s theme,
than this is the place for you. For me one visit was enough.

Hilton Garden Inn Orlando SeaWorld International Center

Our first impression of the hotel was good. The staff were efficient and friendly. The room was comfortable, very spacious and relaxing. It’s a typical Hilton Garden Inn.

It’s close to Seaworld. We didn’t go to Seaworld, but you can easily walk it.

Close to shopping and restaurants.  It’s also close to I-4 for Disney World, Universal Studios, etc.

The only thing I didn’t liked about this hotel was the smell of food at the entrance of the hotel. The restaurant is next to the lobby, with no wall or glass. It’s all in one area. They should separate the restaurant and lobby.

Since 1993 we are traveling to Florida . Over the years we have stayed in many different hotels. I did not mentioned every hotel we’ve stayed in. Why? Because the hotels are part of big hotel chains or were not worth it.
